Shopping for and Finding that perfect holiday dress can be stressful. Whether you want to make a good impression at a work party or on the family you only see once a year, choosing that perfect look can be an adventure. With these 5 steps I almost guarantee an easier, less expensive even fun experience!
#1 – Does the event and venue call for a short or long dress? If it is short the perfect “little black dress” is always an easy flattering go-to. You want it to be form fitting but not too tight. The length should also be appropriate for both professional and personal audiences especially if you want to wear it again! Pair the perfect black dress with a great pair of pumps and you’ve achieved a Wow factor with a dress that otherwise could have just blended in with the crowd. If it is a wedding or winter formal event, a long gown or dress is the way to go. They can be expensive so shopping your favorite local bridal or upscale dress shop may remind you of your Prom shopping days instead of the bargain you are looking for around the holidays! Instead, Google the look you want and the color or material and then check out your local Consignment boutique. Chances are they bring in bulk a selection from out of the area of new dresses but people also love to consign their gently-worn dresses they spent a fortune on but are being sold now for a fraction of their original investment.
#2 – Do you want to stand out or blend in? Dresses can be a “WOW” or a “did I even see her there?” result. It is tough to achieve anywhere in between so why not be the “WOW” gal? Beading, Design, Fabric, Jewels and other style dresses can be a simple way to stand out and look like a million dollars while not actually spending that!
#3 – Shoes, shoes, shoes! I can’t stress this accessory enough. Shoes can truly make any outfit dramatic in the best way. If you are going to be dancing or walking around a lot, comfort is critical, but most high heels or pumps (which only elongate legs and mid-sections) can be comfortable if they have the right heel and height. Material and color are also so important to have people asking our favorite question “Where oh where did you get your shoes???”! Some of my favorite consignment stores and boutiques have THE cutest pumps to pair with that perfect holiday dress and at fantastic prices!
#4 – Accessories and jewelry are fun but also need to be thought through. Keep it simple. Choose a great sparkly pair of earrings, a bracelet that flows well but does not distract from the main attraction – your dress – and flatter your look overall. Depending on the neckline and dress design a necklace may overdo your look altogether. If you go with the little black dress look, a stunning necklace or earrings set can only create a more dramatic look! Handbags are also the best way to complete your look! No one wants to carry their “everyday” purse (or in our world suitcase, ha) with us to a social event partay! Instead shop for simple, easy to carry, yet functional (keys, phone, ID, cash, etc) clutch to accent your look! Again, the best consignment stores and boutiques do a great job of stocking high-end clutches and handbags to compliment a holiday ensemble. Carry that under your hand or arm and you are all set!
#5 – Keep Warm! If you live in a climate with truly cooler temps it is important to stay warm especially if you end up wearing that cute “little” dress or even sleeveless dress you found in your shopping! To do so, pick up a great fur shawl, a soft oversized scarf or that beautiful wool dark-colored coat you’ve had in your closet for years yet it still looks great! Anything to make transitioning from the car to the party easier and warmer!
Lastly and most importantly, Have Fun! This is without a doubt the most important rule of thumb when shopping for your next holiday outing. Personal shoppers can help you, too. Don’t be afraid to ask for help at your local stores or boutiques as most staff members are trained to assist in finding exactly what you have in mind or completing your vision with each part of that perfect holiday look! This is my favorite time of the year and without a doubt my favorite fashion time of the year, too! ~M~
